Going to br taking a trip from the east coast next Monday to look at SELU, what are some things to see in the area, places to eat, things to do etc. I will be there 4 days. Any thoughts on where to stay? Can you still buy crawfish at resturants? Thanks a bunch!

I'm into a lot of things, but only going to be there a few days so I want to see what the avg student does on a normal off day. Bars can be fun but it's not really my fav thing to do. Are there any cool historic places to see? With all the small towns around is there any one that stands out over the other to look for apts at? Hammond, Covington, La Place?

You can look at the State Capitol, which I believe is open all days except Sunday. You can visit the top floors and there is a souvenir shop with a 360 degree view of the city. The Old State Capitol castle is free and showcases alot of Louisiana history as well as the beauty in the building that Mark Twain once said is ugly for a city like Baton Rouge. You could walk on over to the Shaw Center and have an expensive lunch at Tsunami's on the roof. If sushi isn't your thing, you can take in the view for a minute as I have done plenty of times. There are cheaper places to eat along 3rd St, right behind the Shaw and adjacent to The Old State Capitol. The USS Kidd might be a fun tour, not sure if you have to reserve or not but it's a WWII battleship (or destroyer) docked in downtown Baton Rouge on the river.

There are many different opinions and tastes on food so here: .:: 225BatonRouge.com ::. Dining

If you are going to school in Hammond, I would live in Hammond. I didn't really travel I-12 heavily when I lived in Baton Rouge, but I know traffic is a huge time waster. Same goes for LaPlace although traffic on I-55 is lighter, I wouldn't recommend someone new to the area to move that far away from school when there is an adequate city right there.

What the above poster is suggesting would be cool to check out, but I wouldn't recommend that for someone checking out Southeastern. the traffic getting into Baton Rouge is horrible. I would however recommend a quick trip to New Orleans, which from Hammond is about 45 minutes...about same as from Hammond to Baton Rouge.

As far Hammond, there really isn't that much to see or do. Southeastern is a majority commuter school...People from Baton Rouge and New Orleans commute everyday so not much is built around the university.

Now Ponchatoula does have the Strawberry Festival which is always fun, but that doesn't do you any good now. That's about it sadly.
