Oh, SWB, that's just cruel. Don't remind me!

MassVT, the Sentry is still there, though the rest of that mall has changed a lot (pretty much the entire parking lot has been converted to condos/other shops/etc..) Their veggies are better than the larger grocery stores but can still be hit-or-miss--especially during the summer, when you'd think that everything would be tops.

Willy St. Co-op. Woodman's is cheap, but I can't stand their produce. I'll often go there for canned things and such and then go over to the co-op for meat and produce.

I like Aldi's, but you don't want to buy your chicken there

Default Publix

Anyone who has been in the south (Florida) or North Carolina would love Publix or Lowes Foods... both great markets... wish they had them here. sigh.

Publix is nice but it is overpriced. Let's just thank god there are no Winn Dixie's here, even though the chain went bankrupt they still won't seem to go away. WD is the worst grocery store hands down.

totally agree... hated Winn Dixie. I still love Publix...even with a little higher prices. Their deli/ meat/ produce is the best. Their prices are still not even as close to as high as Whole Paycheck...oops I mean Whole Foods.

Do you know if they sell Boar's Head deli meats in Madison? It is the brand that Publix offers...but I haven't seen it around here. The other strange thing is that in Madison MANY of the supermarkets are open 24 hours, where as I don't think any Publix is open past 10PM!

I LOVE this about Madison. I lived in Mequon, WI for a year and often worked late. If I was out of milk and it was past 9, I was out of luck. When I was younger I purposely grocery shopped after 10 to avoid all of the crowds.

I have a question about grocery shopping in this area, however. When did grocery shopping become such a family affair? I'll often see groups of 3-4 adults and scads of children, all obviously together. They tend to block isles and make the whole shopping experience even more hellish than it is in the first place (I hate the grocery store on the best of days). Why can't some of the adults, esp the ones who are clearly not shopping, stay home and watch the kids? Is this some sort of recreational activity for them? Do some people actually enjoy the grocery store? Is Woodman's the new "mall?"

Ive always thought Piggly-Wiggly was pretty decent, but I just dont care too much for those stores where you have to use that 'commie-card' thing to get the 'club' price.

Default Comparing grocery prices

I've given Madison grocery stores a lot of thought. My girlfriend and I cook most of our meals at home which made me curious about how to get groceries cheaper. I went so far as to jot down prices into a little book, but this became rather tedious so I made a computer program to crunch the numbers.

The results are surprising. I thought Woodman's or Sam's Club would beat almost all stores hands-down, but it turns out that you can get some good deals at pretty much every store if you know where to look.

My friend told me to put this info online and we made this free site: http://www.flyerside.com . I thought you food enthusiasts would like it, and could give us some valuable feedback.

Please enjoy the site and tell us what you think. There's no registration required or anything annoying like that.
