But if it creates/maintains the economy of the area, then not only does everyone in that city/township/county/state benefit, but also the nation.
And how much money gets confiscated from the small towns and sent to madison to be laundered/skimmed, then only have a fraction returned to them....if they suck up enough to be deemed worthy of the few crumbs of their own damned money in the first place....

Economic activity not only creates money for the various levels of government (town/county/state/nation) in the form of tax revenues on many levels, but where do you think farmer jane's corn goes? And how does it get there?

Know anything about oshkosh trucks? They are worldwide. Know that a lot of their job shops are in smaller towns throughout WI? IIRC, there's a fab shop by the marina in kewaunee. STOughton truck trailers are nationwide. Know where they are made?

Ever wonder why a lot of smaller towns in WI have fab shops? Or plastics plants? Castings? Cheese?
Trains also create\maintain the economy. Businesses and housing tend to develope around train stops.

I
Raods and rail are just 2 sides of the same coin, public transit. A road or rail benefit the area served, and neither is going to serve everyone everywhere.

Yes, because there is never any delays, problems, corruption or graft in any other public works projects....

California High Speed Rail Slammed In New Government Report, Defunding Project Recommended

Quote:
"Given the federal government’s current financial situation and the current focus in Washington on reducing federal spending, it is uncertain if any further funding for the high-speed rail program will become available," said the report. "In contrast to the interstate highway system, which was constructed with the dedication of funding from the federal excise tax on gasoline, federal funding for high-speed rail is not supported by a dedicated revenue stream and therefore must compete with other annual federal funding priorities."
Perhaps rejecting the money pit wasn't a bad idea after all.....

How much stuff should government take on, exactly? It can't do everything for us. Why on earth would we want them to, when we do them soooo much better ourselves, on our own, with the freedom to succeed or fail and learn from those experiences.

That project is different from the proposed Midwestern Network which is cheaper and easier to build....the whole thing only costing 70 Billion for 700+ miles of tracks.... The Chicago - Milwaukee - Madison - Minneapolis line will only cost 10-15 billion...most of which will be spent upgrading and building new Underground tracks in Chicago...

Oh "only cost" and you wonder why so many Americans are in debt and want to be bailed out by the government and you also wonder why every city and state is broke. It is due to this mentality of "only 15 Billion" or only 900 Billion or only 5-6 Trillion. This is truly unbelievable that people can just write of billions and trillions of dollars like it's no big thing. You are right that it's only peanuts in comparison to the money Obama has just urinated away which is 5-6 Trillion.

Well your state just built a 600 Million $$ highway....so spending a few billion on HSR line isn't going to hurt if you have to spend anything at all. There are hints that private might build the busy Midwestern corridors leaving the Govt to build the Feeder lines which don't make much $$$... As for the 10-15 Billion , not all that is Wisconsin....5 is Illinois , then theres another 5 for Minnesota...so it might just be 5-5-5 and feds pick up 40-60%....so even less then that...
