Hi all! I haven't been on here in a while, but time is getting closer for my move out of California so I have been looking at rentals online.

Are there any areas of Augusta or Bangor that should be avoided? We plan on buying, but at first I will be renting. I am finding some great little options on craigslist, but the rental amounts are anywhere from $900 a month to $3000 a month.

As of right now my plan is to live in city (I am not completely set on whether it will be Augusta or Bangor area at this point) and I don't want to get myself into a situation where I will be alone with 5 kids in a sketchy area Are there even sketchy areas? Most bigger cities have their good sides and bad sides, but since I have never traveled up that way I am not sure how Maine compares to most other big cities in other states.

Thanks!!

Bangor has some nice economical areas and some advantages for Bangor are better schools, lots of public parks and outstanding hospitals should you need one.

When we first moved to Maine, we rented a 2bdrm apartment in Bradley. Heat and hot-water were included. For $600/month. Since we had a dog and a cat we paid an extra $50.

After we were living in the area, we began seeing other apartments that go for as low as $500/month.

Currently our son is in an apartment in Brewer at $550/month.

Default Loved Augusta

As a tourist from Canadaland went to Bangor and Augusta, Bangor is a very large shopping district (very large) for Canadians and I'm sure is the biggest industry, Augusta has very friendly people, a nice size, lots of amenities and history, One great treasure is the revitalization of the historic downtown which should bring back the center core of business.
I would have stayed but couldn't get a green card. I'm coming back for a visit.

In the Bangor area you should be able to find a rent - even of a whole house - for under $1200. Some can be picky and say no smoking and no animals. I can't think of any bad neighborhoods. Great school system in Bangor. The largest employer in the area is Eastern Maine Heath Care and Medical Center. Nice downtown with variety of shops and restaurants, great Library and University Museum. Also a very unique Senior Center that was fashioned out of an old bank. It has 3 floors and is open Mon-Friday.

In Bangor I'd avoid 1 street, and court street. But the streets around those are fine.. Those streets aren't the best, still nothing to worry about really, they're still safe to walk at night.. There are small sections of 4th street, 2nd street, and charles streets that have been sketchy in the past (and may still be).. Generally there are no bad areas in Bangor... The only real problem are bored teens on drugs...

The area around the porn shop (Hammond & Union) has a few crappy places around it... and the gas station in that areas is nicknamed "ghetto ledbetter's" In general the "tree" streets are great neighborhoods, out towards the hospital can be hit or miss.. Out towards the High school there is a really nice neighborhood, and everything on Kenduskeg/Valley Rd bordering the stream is about as good as it gets.. unless you got stephen king money and can buy a lumber barron's mansion in West Broadway.

I feel like I should just post a map...
