Also, I can sympathize with those who talk about "Minnesota Nice." It's like that in Wisconsin, too. There are people who are so sugary sweet that you can't stand how fake they are and you dread it when you see them walking up to you.

I personally enjoy people who are easy to read.
If you think they like you, they do. If you think they don't like you, they probably don't. Is that how people are in Maine?

It does that here too unless you zip your coat all the way up and have gloves/mittens tucked into your sleeves. Snug sleeves help a lot.

Your eyes water when you step outside and the inside of your nose freezes (use your imagination.) Everyone has to wear giant coats with boots and the snow gets everywhere. You have to get up early to go start your car and let it warm up so you don't freeze all the way in to work. You have to shovel your driveway before you can get out and, even though the plows and the salt trucks are out really early, you still can do a lot of sliding around on the ice on your way into work/school. I never realized how dangerous it really was until I left and thought back on it.
This describes Maine winter well.

I miss the lakes and especially Lake Michigan. However, the inland lakes are swarming with lake flies in the summer (gross) and Lake Michigan is too cold to swim in.
We have black flies and greenheads.

I never realized how loyal the Packer fans were until I left and realized that not everyone is a die-hard supportive fan of their local team. I now have a bigger sweet spot in my heart for the GBP's. Go Favre!
We've heard of the Packers. Didn't they play the Patriots this year? Oh....they did....maybe we shouldn't talk about it.

My husband and I will be leaving the PNW soon for his job that could take us to Maine, North Carolina or Maine. Can you swim in the ocean in the summer time or is it too cold?
Lots of people swim in the ocean in summer. Some of them even run in for a dip in winter. I'm not in either category. brrrrrrrrrrrrr

We've had temps as low as -9* and 30" total snowfall at my house already this winter. That's not the norm but it's also not unexpected from time to time. I'm afraid if you're looking for a place where you don't need coats and boots in winter this isn't it. We've had a couple of mild winters in part of Maine the last two years but that's also not the norm. Entire winters usually aren't wicked. 25* windless sunny days are worth some wind and cold at other times. Cross country skiing or snowshoeing on such days is its own little miracle. Beautiful springs, summers that aren't ridiculously hot for long and gorgeous falls make a few short weeks of bitter cold well worth it.

Good luck with your decisions!

Uh oh, I was hoping Maine was milder than Wisconsin. Maybe Colorado is a good medium between the snow-less, wet and dreary Portland and the freezing winters of Maine. Although we all woke up to snow on the ground for Christmas morning - that was really beautiful. It started raining by noon so the snow was gone pretty quick. That's an Oregon winter.

So Maine has a lot of Patriot fans? That's too bad....

Kidding! I thoroughly enjoy people who are loyal to a team.
