Now I ask the burning question...

you have 60k cash to rent or buy a cheap place, your retired, had healthcare and dental at no cost, don't have a family, didn't have work (800 a month pension), no car payment to worry with, where in Maine would you live?

Mid-Maine. Cheaper, friendly, and getting more populated.

As a tourist, if I was to live in Maine I would choose Augusta, soon to have a viable downtown if they proceed with the revitalization of the beautiful buildings downtown, seems to be about the right size of a place to live.

Probably the Newport area... certainly not an urban area unless you need public transportation.

By way of expanding on the input for this thread, it may be helpful to hear if everyone's input on best area for the O.P. to locate is based upon a rental, or a purchase situation. Thanks!

It's hard to make a distinction because generally rents are connected to property values. So, where it is cheap to buy a house, rents tend to be cheaper.

Since we really know nothing about what the OP is looking for, my advice would be to live somewhere where property is cheap, but not so far in the woods that services are not readily available. If he needs public transportation, that would force him to look at some urban options.
