He is not an early riser, but got up just for a moment and I pounced, "Honey there's one for $39K that looks in decent shape."

REALTOR.com: Find a Home - Listing Detail

Any thoughts?
I have looked at that house. Get the realtor to send a photo of the back. You will not believe your eyes. It is falling in on its foundation. The damage is so severe that this house would be cheaper to replace. That is no joke.

When I moved to Eastport I rented before buying. I'm still renting because if I buy I will not be able to sell.

I was here for several months before I started to see how locals (those that were born here) dislike anyone from out of town. People do not make eye contact when passing them on the street. They will not look at you when you say hello. During the summer people did say hello. I guess those were the tourists. Now that the tourists are gone this is a very dismal place. Storefronts are being boarded up. There are different prices for locals and non-locals. The NO RESTROOM sign on Bank Square Pizza's front door applies to out-of-towners only. They do have a restroom for locals.

To prove my theory I didn't shave for four days, put on a dirty sweatshirt and old clothes and went for a walk. People definitely would talk to me more if I was spending money in their store. The picture should be clear.

This beats all: I was walking home on Water St. and a man was blistering his two young boys about the harm that "new people" were bringing to Eastport. How we are driving up property values (remember, we're talking to kids) and changing their way of life. I kept my mouth shut.

The fact is, Eastport is dying. The local attitude will prevent it from rebounding. The waters have been over fished and no other industry will move here. The only hope for Eastport is tourism. The locals want the money from tourism but not the tourists.

I can look across the bay and see Campobello. There is culture and intelligence there. What a shame it can't be imported

We must not be talking about the same Eastport, Maine here. Most people in Eastport will say Hello or wave or tip their cap. I've never been snubbed by a local there. I've had locals stop and comment favorably on the work we've done on our house. Neighbors invite us to their homes, cookouts, save space for us at the July 4 parade. No one has ever accused us of driving up their property values. Eastport is on its way to being discovered and that is what is driving up property values. The ladies at Bank Square Pizza treat me the same way as everyone else and yes, they've let me use their restroom.

Perhaps it's your own attitude that has caused you to be a persona non grata in Eastport.

As for us, we've had our summer home up there for 4 years and in my book, it's a great place to live. The people are wonderful.

We now tell people that we 'winter' in WV because Eastport is really our home.

No, the picture isn't clear at all. Are you trying to say that you had to look like a dirty bum to try and look like a local?

You can tell that just by looking across the water? Amazing ability you have there.

Agreed.. folks couldn't have been nicer... I can't wait to retire there.. with corgis, the fabulous miss m, bewitched, mysterious lady, moughie if she decides on Eastport. My husband has a few remaining distant relatives in Eastport, but even before folks knew that ( and trust me we didn't spend a lot while we were up)... they were wonderful. For the record, we went after the summer folks had cleared out.
