Does anyone of the best areas/towns/counties for buying a piece of land and putting a single-wide on it without worrying about building ordinances?

I'm interested in places that are north of Portland.

Each town can have it's own ordinances. You have to check with each town you are interested in. A lot of towns just go with the state standards.

Portland is Maine's biggest city. I seem to recall hearing that: Portland and it's surrounding suburbs are so densely populated that their population equals the remaining 99% of the state of Maine.

From observations in my travels: densely-populated urban metro-centers usually go hand-in-hand with a high degree of code enforcement and taxes.

Most of Maine [52% of Maine townships] is Unorganized Townships [UTs]. Some UTs have never been organized. While a bunch of other UTs were organized at some point then decided to burn their town charters to gain the benefits of not having the 'organization'.

The lowest degree of building ordinances is found in Maine's UTs.

Good luck

Northern Penobscot and Piscataquis Counties have many towns with no zoning. Lincoln has about 32 different zones and you are under a microscope in Lincoln. It's a pleasant town with many services, but you are under a microscope. None of the towns surrounding Lincoln have zoning. Make your pick; freedom or microscope.

In one town the richest guy in town lived next to a 2 bedroom single wide. The two owners went to kindergarten together some 75 years ago. They hunted together, fished, played little league and high school sports together. Why should government tell these two old life-long friends they cannot be neighbors. Both men have passed on now, but the freedom they lived remains.
