I am thinking of planting some fruit trees this spring. I had plum and pluot trees when I lived on the west coast. Would they survive here??

I would check with a local nursery to see if they have cold hardy varieties for what you want to plant, most do.

Johnnys and FEDCO both have great selections of local grown plants.

My peach and plum trees did well over the winter but the apricots don't seem to alive. They were poor quality trees from Guerney's (never again) that surprised me by making it through the first winter. I'll replace them next year.

I was looking at some trees at Tractor supply but to be honest they didn't look all that healthy.......guess I'll look for a nursery in Bangor.
My plums and pluots took 5 years to start producing, so maybe longer here?!

When I used to visit the Shaker Museum in Canterbury NH.....the docent said the Shakers used to grow fruit trees that weren't adapted to cold winters......by placing them in sheltered places on their campus....between dormitories and the school and meeting houses. They grew peaches before the days that UNH had developed the "Reliance" cold hearty peach tree.

I think the lesson is to know your land.....and the requirements of the specific tree you are planting. Some of that knowledge probably comes with trial and error.

Plant peach trees and other "warm weather" fruit trees on the highest ground you can find. I planted 100+ peach trees and 4 apricot trees last spring in Albion and they all survived the winter. I am at about 550-600 feet elevation. Make sure to plant cold hardy varieties. I got my trees from FEDCO.
