Hi all,

Native Pittsburgher here planning a 3rd straight trip to Maine in October and hoping to sneak in a little fishing. Would prefer saltwater so either surf or in a harbor. I've been Google searching tackle, baits, species, etc and all I seem to come up with is mackerel being the abundant fish, and stripers being wildly popular but seemingly not in the area we'll be staying.

Has anyone fished in/around Lubec and if so, would you mind if I asked some questions and picked your brain a bit? Trying to first nail down what sorts of fish are possible from coastal shores and then I'll do my homework from there. I do a ton of freshwater fishing for everything from musky to bluegill so I kind just need pointed in the right direction and I think I'll be OK but would love to hear advice, tips, etc from anyone who's fished this particular area.

-Ron

I'd suggest that you start by contacting these fellas:

Downeast Charter Boat Tours Lubec Maine

I've camped up at Cobbscook Bay numerous times. There isn't a lot going on up there in Lubec. You can also try Eastport.
I fresh-water fly fish myself so I'm not familiar with the charters out there but I don't recall seeing many to pick from.

Good luck!

If you go boating anywhere down east, have a good nautical chart and a tide table. The currents are very fast and the tides are highest during the new and full moon phases. This advice applies to everybody.

I have a very good GPS made by DeLorme. I entered a waypoint off Leighton Point beach in Millbridge. My GPS screen came up with this message: "Are you sure you want to save this waypoint? You are 16 feet below sea level." I politely told the GPS that I did indeed want to save that waypoint. From that point it is due east to the beach with no rocks to avoid. I could do it in the fog. That GPS reads down to the 1000th of a mile. That is 5.28 feet. I like it.

Thanks fior the advice but this is just a shore fishing venture. Any thoughts/tips/advice on that?

call someone who lives there-they usually have a pulse on the fishing and where to go

call the eastland motel,,,talk to the owners, they are use to getting questions like this-they get overnight visitors all the time(with questions),,so they try to keep a pulse on things and have good answers..

Sounds like an option. Being a Pittsburgher we're not used to calling random people you've never met and asking for help and expecting to get it! LOL.

I've been seeing a lot of mention of Cunners, Bergall, insert other names, that has my interest. They seem like the sea's version of a bluegill. From what I gather mackerel and these little guys are going to be my options in Lubec so I've been trying to read up on both. We stay within walking distance of a large cove, or bay that empties out into the main ocean that has a lot of steeper rocky shoreline as well as some sand/gravel beach area that I was hoping to find edible fish at. Thought it would be nice to be able to sneak out early in the morning before the wife and mom woke up and maybe have a few fish to clean for lunch.

I shall keep reading!

OP thx for starting this thread- we have the same question except extending area to harbors, coves, piers surrounding Jonesport (recently purchased homew there ! ) , Beals Island areas.
We will be there around same as you late SEPT- early OCTOBER.
Beyond fishing, hoping to do some clamming and mussels to and that waters will not be adversely impacted by the red-tide that time. I understand it is a serious health hazard to collecta nd ingest mussels colected from the sand beach when red tide has been a recent term threat.
In advance- thanks all. Missing my Jonesport !
