When I take my granddaughter hunting with me she uses A 223 but it is A single shot not A AR15.I have shot deer with it and it worked just fine.
Good to know...thanks. I have a bolt action .223 and I have thought about using it for deer though I have always considered it useful for woodchucks and coyotes. I'll have to try it next fall on the deer.
Comment for the guy that would arm the deer with semi-auto's. BTDT 40 years ago and it wasn't much fun. I haven't hunted for years because the community where I live is too crowded. I have an old DWM Mauser in 7x57, a Winchester 94 in .45 Long Colt pistol, and a .22 bolt action rifle. If I ever move back to the country I expect the Winchester will do for deer and for a sidearm.
Have you ever heard of anyone using a .223 Remington (M-16,AR-15) for hunting deer? I'd have to believe people do but I personally have never seen anyone in the woods with one. How about a .22 Winchester Magnum...like the .22 Mag/ 20 gauge over and under set up. I don't think I have ever seen anyone specifically use a .22 Win Mag for deer?
With the .223, you have to hit them in the eye, not particularly recommended.

Come on up some fall and hunt Maine. You'll have a good time whether you get anything or not!
I go to Maine to hunt ever chance I get. I think Maine is the perfect state. If I could bring my grandkids with me I would live there year round.
We love having you too. Without the out of state hunters coming in to support the guides, hunting camps, gun shops and other hunting related businesses around the State, Maine would not be the premier hunting destination is is today!
That's Great!!!! Please let us know where you're hunting so we can be somewhere else!
Heck!! You can drive the deer toward me! LOL!
Here in Ohio we aren't even permitted to use rifles. It's either a shotgun with some kind of single projectile, a muzzle loader or a handgun.
I know lots of guys who hunt other states just to experience deer hunting with a decent firearm.
I haven't hunted deer in nearly 5 years, but I'd like to take it up again.
I could be wrong, but a shot at a deer in Maine could be anything from brush to something with some real yardage.
Since we hunt deer in Ohio like most other people hunt rabbits I'd probably lean more toward longer range hunting just for a change of pace. Therefore I'd go with the .243 minded crowd. I even have one of those evil black rifles chambered for Remington 6.8mm SPC. It's a carbine in military trim. The most common load is with a 110gr slug....the same thing as a .270 so you have a fair selection of bullet types and weights. I'm sure I could work up an excellent hunting round for it. Sighted in with a decent scope and it would be one awesom deer rifle. Lightweight, carbine length and dead on accurate. I took a Colt AR with a 20" HBAR that I'd had for years and sent the upper to DPMS with instructions to rebarrel in 6.8mm. They did an awesome job. They did the bolt conversion too and the gun is an awesome shooter.

I'm not sure I want that elephant gun aimed in my direction! LOL!
