Hello Mainers!

I moved to the Lincoln county area a while back. I'm wondering where is a good spot to go target shooting? I'm not too interested in a gun club. I prefer a good sand pit or something similar where long guns would be safe to fire. I grew up in central Maine where we had plenty of places to go shooting. My friends say they don't know of anyplace close by. Any help would be appreciated!

Does your area have any rock quarries?

We have lots of quarries around here.

Though around here I think most folks don't bother to go use a quarry.

We have a gunsmith who opened shop in the past year, and he setup a 200 yard range behind his house.

Half the time, he can hear when we are practicing, so he tries to guess which guns we were firing each time we see him. He is getting pretty good too.

The AK sure would get my attention. Nothing else sounds like it.

The AK's "tunk tunk" sound is very different.

And of course any firearm clicked over to full-auto will sound unique too.

Our eldest son was firing some surplus ammo in his Mosin the other evening. It is amazing how much difference there can be between one brick of rounds to the next. This 'newer' ammo has a 2 foot muzzle flash and it was considerably louder than previous ammo had been.

which mosin? the 91/30 or 44? I just picked up some stripper clips for my 91/30 yesterday. After I have fired it some, I would like to mount a scope to it. I am hoping it is as accurate as its reputation.

I had a 300 yard range set up, from my office window at the house, but some new houses have been built in the area. I am now in the process of making a 300 plus range further down in the woods. Hopefully up to 500 yards when I am done. We still do a lot of skeet in the back yard, however.

I feel like doing some target practice after spending some time on the political posts again.

Our Mosin-Nagant is the 7.62 X 54. Which will reach right out there nicely.

Living on low-land with fairly thick trees and scrub brush, it is difficult to line-up a shot of greater than 50 yards.

c'mon up sometime, we'll blast some paper targets!

We have a camp(er) out in the woods, with a big campfire area, and yard. I am itching to have a cookout/campfire and shooting day. I have 50 lbs of 7.62 ammo coming hopefully tomorrow.

Whos up for that?

I go in back of the house... my woods for 1/2 mile. course my usual is 12 gauge, don't need alot of space a longs ways out.

I'll go to the political forum when I want to feel really down, or when it feels good to know that you are smarter than the 'other' idiot.
