Been in this mode for a couple of days. Called Hannifords, they have the small dressed ones[minus head and innards for almost 5.00. I would get them off a truck but I haven't seen any trucks in Lewiston and Auburn. Am I off season on my quest? Help!

The ice isn't safe yet. The smelt shacks should be out soon. Fresh water smelts will run in about 3 months. Of course you can't sell them except as bait.

Maine Smelt Ice Fishing Camps Near Merrymeeting Bay, Kennebec River, and Tributaries

The ice is safe in your location if you'd like to go try your hand at catching a few of your own. They are fishing at Leighton's, Jim's & River Bend.

Have some fun, take your family!

My son cranked a whole 3 of them out of the Scroggin' the other night too! But, it's still always a good time whether your catching them or not. Smelting is a great way to get outside during the winter time and enjoy a beautiful day! (or night)

As I said, It's early and on Monday with the hot rain forecast they will likely be hauling the shacks off that thin ice or the shacks will be headed out to sea!

Ahh smelts. A sharp pair of scissors and a pile of fish and you can clean up quite a mess of 'em. Snip snip! Learnt that at a processing plant in the '60's.

The mouth of the Royal River in Yarmouth used to be covered with smelt shacks this time of year.

Last time I had smelts was at that little restaurant on Wilson St. in Brewer. On the right going toward Ellsworth right after the light.

There are a lot more than 30 shacks there, according to the link Mermaid provided, not to mention all the other places. These are all fairly close to you, revarie. You really should check them out! You can't get any fresher smelt than that. My nephew and friends did much, much, much better yesterday btw. Enough to keep them busy for awhile.

Christ, they'd have to travel some long distance to get out to sea, I'm not aware of anyone ever having put an outboard on one yet. Last I knew they'd sink before they were found off of Half Way Rock.
