Hello! Question? I am relocating from Richmond VA. I got a job in gaitherburg which I'm excited about but I experienced the traffic and it's TERRIBLE. my husband is at the Dulles airport, where do we move to try to split the commute?

Just a suggestion:

1) Jefferson/bordering areas-Berkeley County, WV.

You can still drive or choose to take the MARC train to Gaithersburg. Husband's commute (although no MARC train in that direction) drive time close to 40mins to an hour depending on weather conditions (and traffic lights).

Depending on your schedules [I worked in DC, but dh had various jobs around Sterling and Reston (Northern VA)], he would either drop me off in Brunswick, MD and drive down the rest of the way or I'd come further in w/ him and be dropped off at one of the Park and Rides, bus to W.Falls Church metro. It was nice to spend quality time riding in together, sharing cup of coffee. Sometimes I'd drive and he'd catch up on some sleep if he was really tired.

Depending on how much of a commute you want to split, 50-50 or 70-30 in one or the other's favor:

2) Brunswick, MD - area

3) Purcellville, VA - area
\
Choices might depend on your times to be at work and whether it's a strict daily work schedule or does it require someone to be on some kind of emergency work schedule, on call 24/7. I'm sure others posting might have better ideas.

Thank you! I will be working 8 or 830-5pm monday-Friday and he will be working M-Thursday 5am-3pm or 1pm-11pm so the drive together does not work for us. I know one of us will have to commute a little. I may just move to Ashburn and commute because Im a nurse so i may or may not stay at a certain place but he has been with the company for 12 years. Any other suggestions.

It's interesting that depending on where and who you ask, you'll get different answers...'close in' answers -- vs further out answers. Such as those who point on DC, McLean areas -- vs the Brunswick, MD, Purcellville, VA - and WVa suggestions.

Is there a place you could pick that would mean a light traffic commute for you both?

I'd never heard of Brunswick or Purcellville but they look like they night work for you, and would be cheaper than close in. So would Potomac which is closer to Dulles and Gaithersburg -- but also pricier, and would put you in more traffic.

Sounds like his commute isn't going to be too bad compared to yours. You should live nearer to your job.

Absolutely, with his off hours (no traffic at 11pm) you should definantly be closer to your work (somewhere between Germantown and Rockville). That being said, if you don't mind a bit of commute Point of Rocks is a nice 'rural' area and hubby can take 15 in to Leesburg to/from work. If you have $800k+ for a house, then you can look in Potomac/Bethesda/McLean (actually, better make that $1million unless you want the 60s split-level.)
