My partner and I currently live in Chevy Chase, MD in Montgomery County and have two young children (oldest is almost 3). We are considering a move farther north in MD to be near her work in Hanover, MD, closer to family and to a more affordable neighborhood so that I can stay home with the children. We are looking for a gay family friendly area, with excellent schools. We currently enjoy a very liberal environment where no one thinks twice of our children having two moms - no issues at daycare, with other parents, etc. While we would love for other gay families to be in the area, we know that may not be the case, but it would be great for us to not be the first "two mom" family that teachers/administrators have met. It is very important for us to feel comfortable and welcome where we live. Is this possible in and around Ellicott City or an area near by? I haven't been able to find any information with my limited research. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I made the opposite move a while back. I can't speak to your specific situation, but my experience in the area was that it was far more conservative than your current area. Hopefully others can shed more light.

Living in EC near US29/MD100. People 'seem' open enough, but I've never met any dual mom/dad families. There's a high chance you could end up being the first.

Default Gay family friendly town near DC

My partner and I are moving from CT to the DC area with our 8 year old son. We are looking for a town that is gay friendly, has great schools and is commutable to Friendship Heights. Any thoughts on CHevy Chase, Bethesda, Silver Spring, Potomac, MD or other areas?

My first choice would be Takoma Park, MD. It's one of the few places in DC where you would see gay couples holding hands. Any of the other towns would be fine also. The best schools may be in Bethesda (if you have the budget for it). Potomac is very spread out and status conscious.

I think you are better off living in Columbia. There are a ton of multiracial families and it is known as a very liberal and tolerant community. I would not think you will have any problems especially if you live in a family friendly neighborhood. I have known 2 mommy families and transgender people at my kids preschool (it was liberal preschool). They even had male preschool teachers which in general is uncommon in preschools and daycares. Good luck.

However, I do not know if I would consider Columbia gay friendly but it is pretty tolerant of all kinds.

I agree about Columbia. My partner and I live with our 5-year old daughter in the Thunder Hill neighborhood (near 29 and 108) and no one has batted an eye. It is a community where diversity is the norm.
