My Husband just accepted a new job in Silver Spring. We currently live in Louisiana and will be moving to MD sometime around End of January. We have been looking for apartments online, anywhere close to silver spring but it's so hard as we have no idea about the areas. Every time i find an apartment online, i hear negative things about the area or the apartments. I'm so worried about finding a good and safe apartment for us to rent. Our Max budget is $1500 per month. We are looking for 2 bedroom apartment and hoping to find an apartment not more than 30-40 mins away from his work place.

Please if anyone can help us with the safe areas to look for apartments or if u can suggest some good apartments for us. We would really really appreciate

Thanks in advance!

I think it will be very difficult to find a 2-bedroom for $1500 in a safe area. All you will find are places that look scruffy. Can you go with 1 bedroom until you are making more money? BTW, I lived in the Wheaton 20902 zip code for 30 years and found it safe. Ignore the negative comments about Wheaton. To find areas cheaper than Silver Spring, look north and northwest to Olney, Rockville, Gathersburg, Fulton. You can also look at Laurel and College Park.

I second goldenage1's post, I'm also from Wheaton and its generally safe and about a 5-10 min drive to downtown Silver Spring. The huge lots of apartments around the Glenmont Metro stop are not the best and you should avoid those. Nearly all of Silver Spring is safe, the worst areas would be Glenmont and kind of the ghetto areas near Takoma/Takoma Park although the good parts of Takoma Park are very nice.

You should also ask your question in the Washington DC Suburbs in MD forum, most of the people in the Maryland general forum are from rural Maryland.

If you could live in a 1 bedroom, you can find a decent apartment for under $1500 within a short commute of Silver Soping. I suggest using hotpads.com. If you really have to have 2 bedrooms, you will have a longer commute. There are plenty in Frederick, and you could take the MARC train to Silver Spring.

One option I like is the Vistas at Laurel Lake in Laurel. It is a condo complex with individual 2 bedroom units sometimes renting for $1350-1450. It doesn't appear on apartmentratings.com. But I think individually owned condos are better maintained than rental complexes.
