My husband and kids may relocate to MD. I will work in DC (near the Chinatown metro stop) and my husband has a job in Edgewood. Requirements are great public schools for the kids, and ability to buy a house for approx $300-400K. Husband has a flexible schedule so he is willing to drive an hour if necessary. Friends say Howard and/or Montgomery counties have the best schools. From the map, it looks like Columbia might work. Specific questions: 1) Any info on ability to commute to DC from Columbia? 2) Any comments on drive to Edgewood; 3) Any other areas that might be feasible?? Thank you soooo much for your insight!!

There are express MTA buses from Columbia to Downtown DC. The trip is about an hour, but it is far less stressful than driving yourself.

I would not want to drive to Edgewood, but you husband might make it work.

You could also look at Elkridge and Ellicott City. Elkridge may have less expensive housing, and it would put your husband slightly closer to Edgewood.

You can commute to DC from Columbia. There are commuter bus routes all over Columbia that go directly to DC. I used to commute from Silver Spring from Columbia everyday for work, I think the bus was $3.50 one way but that was back in 2010 so I'm not sure if the fare has gone up. Your budget is doable for a 3 bedroom home. Most 3-4 bedroom homes in the area are $400K+ though. You may luck out and find something in the $380-390K range, most homes below that range are either less generous in square footage or require work or updating. Elkridge is definitely an area to consider if you want slightly cheaper housing, but the difference in price will only be slight.

It's a great area. We really love living here. Very family oriented, and close knit community. Lots for children to do in the area.
