Not sure what the description of small town feel is but Richmond is certainly bigger than the towns suggested here. My first thought was Frederick, a simply lovely town of 60,000 with mountain views and farms right outside of town. Or perhaps Sykesville, which has a more small town feel than the sprawl that is Eldersburg. Mt Airy of course is my home and it's a wonderful place but housing is expensive.
You don't have to drive through the city........I worked in Annapolis, and never drove through the city, and drove down on the west side to avoid the tolls. Same distance. Was about an hour drive in the late 90's. I was also leaving about 5:30-6AM.

I am looking for advice, not a fight or drama. I’m in no way a fan of internet drama.

For clarification purposes: we need to be in Maryland state and would like to be away from the city, but also not in the middle of nothing but farms. As mentioned previously, our family is still in Southern NJ so the closer the better. Grade Schools especially need to be good. Would like convenience of a handful of stores within 20 minutes.

He may be a well respected member of this board, but on this particular thread, he's been distinctly unhelpful. Here is the sum total of his "contribution" prior to your comment.

People are always coming on here, want to work in DC, or the DC Metro, and can't afford to live in DC, or the Metro, and are willing to go through crazy commutes to have a job there.

The OP is mostly telecommuting, want's to live Rural, than why even live in the state if you only have to there once in a while?

And does the OP wan't to be near anything? You don't have to live in the city, but you can be 15 miles from it in a very rural setting. And be with 5 miles of almost everything.

I can drive to Quaker Bottom Road and it will seem like it is very much in the middle of nowhere, but it's not that far from everything.

My Father in his late 60's after retirement worked in New York City, driving there from Baltimore, and back every week. Did it for two years. He would stay there three days, and come back.

Why not live 60 miles south west of DC in Virginia Will be cheap, and very rural.
I'm with Stephanie on this one. If Digger doesn't want to offer constructive advice, he ought to just refrain from commenting.

Refrain from what. This person doesn't know whether they are coming, or going.

That includes a few other posters in this thread.

Yeah, move to northern Harford County, better yet Cecil County..... Yep, they would be my home base........

Which just goes to show how insular many Marylanders are when you consider the state has just 157 incorporated municipalities. Especially since Cecil County is the location of one of the casinos (Perryville). There's more to the state than the Balt-Wash corridor and its issues.

If the husband is required to live in Maryland and his territory includes Cecil County somewhere in the center, then North East isn't a bad location, especially since they don't want an urban environment.

Now, I might be cheating a little bit having been involved in municipal matters for more than thirty years.

Have you never driven to Wilmington or Philadelphia or New York? North East is Exit 100 off I-95.

Nope, I am pleasantly insular.

(I have only been to Philadelphia once, and have zero desire to go to NYC)

Yeah, in the West Virginia C-D forum right now, there's a single guy, relocating for a job in Fairfax County, and insisting he would like to commute from Morgan County, WV (Berkeley Springs area). He thinks the Martinsburg - Charles Town area would be too crowded for his taste. People are advising against it, but he is insistent. Wait until winter snow and ice comes along.
