I don't disagree (I posted in that thread) but if you want to live in a very rural area and make more money, sometimes you have to do the "super commute."

It isn't my style in the least, but the jobs in and around rural areas normally don't pay as much, and are far fewer, than the suburban areas. It's worth it for some people, I guess.

Stephanie - not sure if you’re still looking, but have you looked at Calvert County, MD? I was thinking Huntingtown or Dunkirk. I lived in St. Mary’s County but it is probably too far south for you (though still within the 2 hours of Rockville). St. Mary’s definitely has affordable housing and is family oriented, small-town feel. Feel free to message me if you have other questions.
