What is the westernmost commuter train/T stop I could drive to from Western MA, find paid or free day parking, and get into central Boston via public transportation for occasional day trips? And how long would it take?

Worcester is the closest commuter rail station to western mass, and it would take you more than twice as long as it would to to just drive into or around Boston. Why not drive to the Riverside stop on the green line and park there for the day. From Springfield you could be in the parking lot in roughly 70 minutes, and the train ride into Government center is another 35-40 minutes.

Just for a day trip, or anything away from peak business hours - I agree, drive to Riverside.

However, from Worcester to South Station by train is about an hour and a half. By car and Green Line, it's maybe 10-15 minutes faster, since going from Worcester to Framingham by train is a crawl compared to a car.
