How is retirement for those in Massachusetts? Is there good health care? Lots of activities...I don't want to be stranded in the house. Are the taxes high for out of state pensions.

High cost of living: housing, state income tx, excise tax, food, utilities....

yes, lots of activities if you live close to Boston.

I agree with the high costs but there is lots to do near Boston, yet I would recomend the Cape Cod area. Beautiful areas and beaches with lots of activities.

Depends. If its a state/local/federal pension, it's not taxed, even out of state. If it's not a gov't pension, it's 5.3% flat rate on your AGI.

SE New Hampshire would be a little better if you're pension isn't gov't related. Retirement income in NH isn't taxed. Nashua, NH is closer to downtown Boston than I am in Worcester. Salem, NH is even closer, but IIRC Nashua is usually listed as a great place to live (might be to raise children though YMMV). Coastal NH is a bit further.

The short answer is it depends. Our state tax laws are overly complicated, but here is a good summary I found regarding nontaxable pension income:

As much as a friend has tried to convince me (and acts to improve the city) Nashua isn't exactly all hats n' horns for retirement or for living. Financially, NH is expensive for goods brought in (like all of N.E.) and real estate taxes. The best healthcare would be Boston- not sure about the immediate vicinity except maybe around Portsmouth is pretty good (as per an elder friend of mine who lives there). Rents are high because of the real estate taxes. No income tax, no sales tax, great if you drink and smoke cigarettes, too.

There's no shortage of cultural/outdoors/educational options throughout the whole area. You will be car-dependent, though (something I think about for the future).

Many from the area retire and leave it ASAP. Why would you do the opposite?

NH isn't cheap either, property taxes are really high and they tax investment income at 7%.

Cape Cod has some super low property taxes and a good hospital

When I have visited Cape Cod in the off season (the rest of the year other than summer) it is always quiet and for me, a little boring and isolated.
