To me there are several type grocery stores to shop at:

1. Convenient location. In and out for what I need now. Prices not that important.

2. Selection/quality. Will have everything I want. One stop shopping. Prices not that important.

3. Ideal is #1 and #2 and Market Basket had both plus lower prices.

I hope Arthur T and Market Basket survive. If not, The King is dead, long live the King.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll be going to Hanneford's by the sound of it. Aldi's sounds like the grocery stores in England where you put in a coin to get a cart but you get the coin back. You bag your own groceries too. I like the idea of bringing your own reusable bags even though I usually forget and leave it in the car.

I guess we will all cope whether Market Basket lives or dies but it would be better if it survived.

I have known Aldi's for many years. They are a German based corporation. My first experience with them was in Ireland in the 90's. I do stop in the local Aldi's once in a while when they advertise something that interests me. They are more a warehouse, stock up, not real personable, bag it yourself kind of place. Not my type place.

The latest news reports are saying that Arthur T.'s offer is the last one on the table but the board of directors is strongly denying that assertion claiming there are still multiple offers in play.

I just don't believe the BoD. What entity is going to step into this mess now? I am convinced that Arthur S. will not do anything that will allow his cousin to save face even if that means bankrupting himself in the process.

I would also suggest putting in a query on the Maine forum. I know there were stores affiliated with the (now bankrupt) distributor Associated Grocers of Maine out of Gardiner. I believe many of the stores operated under the name Shurfine. I could not find a web listing of the locations. Someone on the Maine forum who currently lives up there may know more information. Good luck.

I had no idea MB owners even had this great reputation of treating their employees well until this story came into the media. It gives me hope for all other companies!

I usually stop at Stop n Shop because of the union. They actually have a kick-arse union IMO (free health insurance, Sunday 1.5 pay, great pension, etc as i last knew of in the early 2000s) Some of the other unions i've seen have not even been worth their dues.

I was a member of SEUI at one point- no overtime pay, workers had a hefty contribution to health benefits, no pension, low salaries, etc.

Gosh, you seem so bound to your perspective that you don't realize that it isn't the private company doing that.

Besides, the issue I raised is not about the efforts but how they're directed. The efforts are fine and good, but they're directed too narrowly. Did you read my earlier comments?

"Believe what makes you feel good."

Well state an argument please.

"Gosh, you seem so bound to your perspective that you don't realize that it isn't the private company doing that.

Again just answer the basics that I brought up. If a business plan works for the customers and employees why modify it? If you read MY earlier comments?

It is private company that is run by a rich family with little transparency outside of what can be determined with lawsuits and estimates by industry watchers. What did they think would occur?

Take any group started by a founder and have them leave. Then watch the argument of those staying true the founder and those taking it in another direction. Religions are this way, companies are this way, sometimes even non profits are this way.

Your unilateral declaration earlier I was "not making a logical arguement" [sic] is unsupported by anything other than your claim that you're special. How convenient to just blind yourself to info you don't want to acknowledge. So I won't waste my time trying to get someone so bound to your own perspective to change your mind.

I went to Market Basket today to scope it out.
There are a few 'supporters' on the property, but not many.
In the store there are many workers just making work because there are few shoppers.
The areas in no supply are produce, bakery and meats.
If the workers really support Artie T why don't they all quit?
The principle of the thing.
, you know.
