Say I take a bus into Boston, and get through the Canada border, can I then make a go of it and try to live there? I mean...I have a passport, can I just look for a job? and try to live there for a pre-determined period of time? I guess I'm also wondering if I cross into the place, and do not have any arrangements made, would I have trouble finding a couch to crash on, or some friendly folks to help me out. If there is such a night life, maybe I can just chill in the casino for a night or something...and then the next day can I find an unskilled job for myself and then just try to live there for a year or 2?

Well, if this fails I'll have a backup plan in Moncton New Brunswick, or Riviere-du-Loup, Quebec and I'll start working on immigration from there.

I have a ton of questions but I'll start with the most obvious:

Do you have a visa of some kind? It's HIGHLY unlikely that you'll get an unskilled labor job to sponsor you for one.

This has BAD idea written all over it.

You need a visa that allows you to work.

The only legal means to move permanently to the U.S. is to be sponsored by a relative or an employer.

Legally you're not going to have much luck. As a Canadian you can visit, but working is going to be tough. Where are you now if Moncton is your backup plan?

If he goes to Boston and tries to find a girl to marry him before his tourist visa (which I think is an automatic six months for Canadians) expires, I would like to request that a reality TV crew follow and film him because this has the potential to be hilarious.

I'm going to bet this won't work out for the OP. One of my wife's best friends is Canadian and got her MBA from a respected university in the Boston area. Even she couldn't find an employer to sponsor her before her visa ran out so she had to move back to Canada.

Thanks CaseyB.

It's sad that there are people out there who want and enjoy this type of attention.

OP, I wish you the best of luck.

Sorry, guys, but for some reason our Canadian forum is withstanding this sort of messages with unstoppable and unending regularity from your compatriots. "Can I just up and move?" - this innocent question is asked time and again. So instead of working our fingers to blisters, typing over and over the same response ("we are a different country, eh") - it will be possible to refer them to this very thread, where you, their compatriots, say a thing or two to the hapless inquireres about visas and job offers and what not.
