I'm not saying we should give up the fight to bring peace and equality to the world, but isn't this what MLK among other leaders has been trying to do for years.

Willdufauve is correct. The only way to make a change is by confronting the hatred & ignorance of these people. In truth, it matters little what we say here in this forum. Change/reformation will only occur when those who are near to them (enlightened family members, neighbors, friends at work/school, etc) stand up against their bigotry. The good people of that community need to stand up and speak out against those acts. Confrontation by peers can be powerful.
But, still, it is sad to even have to write these words in 2008, isn't it? It's embarrassing.

Good idea, it's starts in our households first as well as with our neighbors. We as people of all races have to respect ourselves first, that way no one will have a reason to call us names and make assumptions. I try to raise my sons in such a manner so that regardless of their skin color respect is given to them, it starts at home. Speaking out is a powerful tool, but our actions speak louder, our conduct in public should reflect upon how we want to be treated by our peers.

Racism exists all over the world. It's a fact of life. The solution is: 1) yes, to confront it when it happens, and talk about it as a community, and 2) work to ensure that all people in society have a decent education. We can talk till the cows come home about how bad racism is, but unless we are willing to create a society in which all children are given a proper education, nothing will change. Ever.

You've got a good point, MovingForward. Unfortunately, however, racism has been so deeply ingrained in the very fabric of our society and throughout the world from day one that it's going to be a rather long, tough haul. Even if Barack Obama becomes president of the United States in the fall, it certainly can't or won't undo more than two hundred years of inglorious racial history and racism in the United States. But...it could well be a step in that general direction.

I think, frankly, that there is too much talk about race in this country. As a teacher, I have taught an increasing number of biracial students over the years, and if there's one common thread among them it's that they are sick to death of talking about race, hearing about race, being told to identify with one race or another, etc. If Obama were elected President, we might finally be able to make headway on ending this race obsession. But racism will NEVER be eradicated. Just as sexism or anti-semitism will never be eradicated. At a certain point, you just have to move on.
