I'm currently in Winchester and being interviewed for a position on the seacoast of NH. I mapped it and it's about 50 mins / 48 miles. My boyfriend works downtown and takes the commuter rail > the T > to work every day, door to door about 1 hour.
Right now my commute is about 40 mins from Winchester to Watertown (about 10 miles) and it doesn't bother me. I guess I'm more concerned about miles on my car than time.
I could do the commute until our lease is up in the fall, but where could we move to after that would cut down my commute but not extend my boyfriends? I know there's some perfect location but any general ideas would be great. We are young and don't have kids, but like the feel of Winchester.
Beverly, maybe? Your boyfriend could take the commuter rail.
I think it would be better to pick one of the towns that's right on I-95. That would make it a quick commute up to the seacoast. When you get into that Beverly/Salem/Cape Ann area, you're adding a lot of time to your commute by driving to and from the highway. I would look in Ipswich, Rowley or Newburyport.

Winchester to say Portsmouth is a reverse commute thus not that frustrating. Moving any closer to Portsmouth will make his commute longer and more frustrating. A commute is more about time and frustration rather than miles. I advise get the job and do the commute for a few months before changing location.

Move to Portsmouth and tell your boyfriend to change jobs
I have lived in both Winchester and Portsmouth. Other than the proximity to Boston, Portsmouth is a no-brainer.
From Winchester, the NH Seacoast is a reverse commute. When I lived there, I reverse commuted to Salem NH. The Seacoast would be a much longer drive but a pretty easy drive.
I like living on salt water. I'd pick Newburyport. It's an hour+ train ride to North Station but I'd deal with that to be on the coast. You also have the bus service in to Logan and South Station from the commuter lot on I-95 in Newburyport. I'd also consider Beverly and things between Newburyport and Beverly near the train stations.
Andover doesn't save enough commute to NH to bother looking at. I'd rather be in Winchester. You need to be on I-95 if you're splitting the difference.
