Here we go again (some of you may know my other posts).

If Hubbie continues to work in Albany, Ny (instead of retiring and moving away) and we move to Massachusetts, especially in the Berkshires, how is the commute?

Mileages calculators indicate that the mileage and time would be less than it is now from central NY (currently 52 miles and about 1.25 to 1.5 hrs each way) from areas like Great Barrington, Pittfield, and Lee.

We like the "New England" type of towns, walkable, with things to do, restaurants, shopping, etc. We have snow now, but is the snow worse in the mountains? How is road maintenance? He could take I-90 into NY.

Any other towns we could look into, maybe Northampton?

Any and all info appreciated.

I-90 is probably the best maintained road in the state. I think Northampton is too far but any of the towns on the NY border are commutable. The weather is more or less the same as in upstate NY.

Agree with the above post. Northampton will be much too far and prices are rising there all the time (so we've been told).

Maybe Pittsfield is a possibility?

I recommend Great Barrington. There are others who commute to Albany from there, and it's kind of like Northampton, but with a bit more New York-y vibe.

When I worked for GE, there were several colleagues who worked in Pittsfield (which was then the HQ for their Plastics division), and commuted from the NY side. East Greenbush seemed to be the popular place to live. They used to make the commute on US 20, which is scenic but as I understand it, not the safest. I recall a GE employee losing their life on that road back in the 90s.

Thanks everyone. Went for a ride today and looked around. We liked Lee and Great Barrington. Will keep going there and look around in all kinds of weather. Timed and checked mileage. Trip will take less than what Hubbie does now.
