I recently got a new job and my office is close to the MIT/Kendall stop. I currently live very far down on the South Shore and my commute is going to be roughly 2 hours each way, so I’m looking to move somewhere where it will be roughly 1 hour or less each way. (Though I’d be willing to go up to an hour and 15 minutes or so for the right area.) I’m open to staying on the South Shore or going west or north of the city - I’m considering all options! Any suggestions based on the criteria below?

I want:
- 2 bedroom condo for under $400k
- Close proximity to commuter rail or T station
- Close proximity to green space/parks to take my small dog to
- Safe area for living as a single female

I don’t care about:
- Nightlife/bars
- Schools

How about Beverly, north of the city? Commuter rail, quiet community. I was just looking online and there are several not-snazzy-new condos well under $400k.

Medford. Should be some form of condo there for 400. You should be able to get to Kendall from there promptly via some combination of walking, bike, scooter, bus, T etc

Best I could come up with is that there's a couple condos for sale in Braintree with a bit of a hike to the Red Line stop.

Commute would suck to Kendall.

It's going to take more than an hour door to door on CR. Guaranteed.

For a commute to Cambridge, I would recommend somewhere on the Fitchburg Line/Rt.2 corridor. The Fitchburg Line stops at Porter, which is 3 stops away from Kendall/MIT on the Red Line. You could also drive all of Route 2 to Alewife and take the Red Line to Kendall/MIT from there.

If this were a few years ago, I'd recommend Arlington to you. It's one of my favorite inner suburbs of Boston and it would be a very convenient location for you, it borders Cambridge. Sadly that condo you want would now run you quite a bit above your price range. This 2br condo is probably the type of thing you're looking for and it just sold for $638k https://www.realtor.com/realestatean...2-66301#photo1

I would recommend Acton to you if you're willing to live in a low-density, more family-oriented area. Acton would probably be an hour door-to-door to Kendall and you could get a pretty spacious condo in your price range. This 3br townhome just sold for $347! https://www.realtor.com/realestatean...8_M93698-24361 Acton has a lot of open space and you could take the commuter rail from South Acton or West Concord. Buyer beware though, South Acton is notorious for not having enough parking spaces for commuters.

Also, would not recommend Beverly. That would be a nightmare commute to Cambridge.
