This afternoon, a woman was shot dead at the Globe Car Wash. This is in the South End, at the corner of Broadway and South Main. Not much info, yet.

Exclamation Teenage girl shot

A 15-year-old girl was shot on Danforth St. last night. The victim was rushed to the hospital, and several shell casings were found around the scene. Danforth St. is right near Battleship Cove and the waterfront area, which has been hyped multiple times on this forum.

It won't be long before somebody comes on here and reminds us that this ghetto neighborhood is cut off from the waterfront area by the highway. Well guess what, that "highway" is is being demolished and transformed into a "boulevard" where both sides will be "adjoined" again into one big happy family.

A couple of thoughts:
  1. Is the implication here that this incident is proof that it's not safe for someone to get dinner at The Cove, visit the Battleship, go to a show at The Narrows, or go have a drink at the Tipsy Seagull?
  2. The removal of 79 is irrelevant to how this neighborhood (particularly Heritage Heights) is connected to the waterfront. Heritage Heights has always had easy pedestrian access via Central Street. I don't think any of the "bad guys" were too put off by having to cross under the multiple highway decks before the reconfiguration and the new configuration (which has been open for years in that section of town) is only a marginal improvement as far as pedestrian/vehicular access goes. The rest of the neighborhood behind the projets is still separated by a giant retaining wall and railroad tracks (which aren't going anywhere), so pedestrian and vehicle access between Central and Turner Street is not going to change at all unless the "bad guys" take up rappelling.

Not proof, but a reminder of the surrounds that exist. A high potential for some "locals" to be wandering over there. You definitely want to be watching your "six" after dark.

The whole point of it is to connect the "neighborhood" to the waterfront. The highway is just as much a mental barrier as it is a physical or practical one.

So how does this make the Fall River waterfront different from other urban areas where people would go eat/drink/be entertained? Using common sense, especially after dark, is pretty much implied in any urban area.

For that matter, nobody's visiting the Battleship, Gates of the City, Maritime Museum, Heritage Park or Carousel after dark. They're daytime attractions. The Tipsy Seagull, Tipsy Toboggan, Pier 52, and Canned Heat are about a mile from Heritage Heights (and not an easy walk). Even The Cove, Troy City Brewing, and The Narrows are 3/4 mile on foot. Not to mention, most of these venues have parking on-site which people utilize so there's not a ton of foot traffic on the streets between spots.

Right, but nothing is changing with the neighborhood in question. That's my point. The highway ramps by Heritage Heights aren't going anywhere. It was reconfigured several years ago as part of Phase 1 and will remain the same (before + present). There is not a new waterfront connection going in until Turner St., 3/4 mile north of Heritage Heights which doesn't really do anything to improve waterfront access for that neighborhood. And while I doubt that any criminal in that area is going to find the elevated highway (current or past form) to be a "mental barrier," they will still have to contend with an actual physical barrier in the form of the giant retaining wall which isn't going anywhere. For reference, this Phase 2. As you can see, it doesn't really start connecting anything to the waterfront until you get closer to President Ave.

Are we assuming that the shooting happened at Heritage Heights? I saw no mention of where on Danforth St. this occurred. Even Turner St. (I thought it would be further south) is significantly closer than President Ave. and gives a straight shot over to WWII Park.

This isn't only a matter of "criminals" finding their way back and forth. It starts when you get more general riff raff making their way back and forth. The vibe changes, and that's when criminals follow. Case Study Downtown Crossing.
