It has always been that way.
When safe to do so, right foot goes back on the gas pedal, and left foot comes off the brake pedal.
Always been that way for me, so it is as automatic as those who take foot off gas pedal, and place same foot on brake pedal.
I couldn't imagine using left foot for brake and right foot for gas only. If I did that, I might have an oops like this person did!

I drove stick daily for about 20 years. I never used two feet when driving an auto.

I used to be a 2-foot automatic driver until I learned to drive a stick. Had to relearn how to use my feet.

99% of the time now when i get into an automatic i single foot drive, but I can 2-foot it. I just don't have a need to other than rolling burnouts (on a closed course )

I also drove manual for most of my life, got in the habit of left-foot braking when driving an automatic so I wouldn't instinctively bring my left foot down on the brake as I got close to stopping, thinking it was the clutch. Haven't had a stick shift vehicle in probably 15 years, but never saw any reason to get away from two-foot driving.

Lots of 2 foot brakers often ride the pedal.
