(I edited my post about the 4th) So he's in Honokowai, an instructor took my husband and daughter diving there. My husband later got certified in Maui.
If he was home in Honokowai then he's fine - that area was not impacted by the wildfires in terms of damage. Likely no cell service and perhaps power issues.

Hate to say it, but shouldn't they have had more fireboats in their fleet?
The volume of fire present would have required multiple fireboats for each structure, there's no such thing as big enough fleet for what we're talking about in Lahaina.
As others pointed out, the winds would have prevented the streams from being very effective. And the streams from a fireboat aren't getting to the 100's of structures just a block in from the waterfront.
Fireboats spraying water would have looked great for the cameras, but their proper use was pulling people out of the ocean. Life over property, always.

Agree - and fireboats are great for putting out a fire on a boat out in the ocean in an emergency. Not an entire town.
The worst fires in Australia killed 179 people in 2009. Many lessons were learnt but the fires of 2019/20 still killed about 25.
Many people then made very generous donations but some major fundraisers were for the Rural Fire Service, which is the partly voluntary organisation which does most of the firefighting. Their charter meant donations were not able to passed onto the people affected and they had to go to court to try to redistribute it.
Maui will be so difficult to rebuild even with money flowing. We were hit with the massive labour shortage affecting much of the western world. Tradies have to have accommodation and it is difficult to find when the devastation is so widespread.

In Europe they have been using Canadair planes for water bombing this summer. They have some effectiveness but usually with high wind there is little that can be done other than firebreaks and evacuating everyone.
Lahaina is one of my favorite places on the planet. Very sorry for the people who lost their lives. Very sorry to see the destruction. Poems will be written about that banyan tree.
The big failure here is no communications systems for emergencies. Should have been sirens or something (like they had during the Japanese tsunami). WTH
We had devastating fires in 2020 when our normally West to East winds turned into East to West winds and very strong (abnormally strong winds). They can't stop a wildfire with those winds.

Where did you read they didn't have any sirens?
