Anywhere that is truly downtown is safe and very nice. Just a short drive to that post office. The Sleep Inn downtown is usually pretty cheap, it is on Front/Main St.

Just make sure it's actually downtown... some motels advertise "downtown area" but they are not, and are in pretty bad areas. Just make sure to look at a map, and go by that.

Check out the reviews on the hotel before booking - I go nowhere without checking tripadvisor first.

Bed Bug Reports for Tennessee
Might want to take a look at this. Seems like it would be easy for someone with a grudge to make a false report, so maybe not totally reliable.
In any event I think I'd check ANY room for bedbugs before I slept in it, no matter how nice or clean it appears.

With a three week stay you may be in the category of an extended stay rate. These types of hotels usually have full breakfast and often dinner and wine/beer all included in the rate. I'd look for a Residence type of lodging Downtown.

thanks all... I was checking trip advisor yesterday, and some of the comments/reviews that were recent were kinda confusing... one customer had a great stay and another didn't.. but will keep checking.. will definitly check out the bed bugs link.. as I do remember something about bed bugs in Memphis especially this summer..
wouldn't do me any good for a 3 week extended stay as orientation is only 2 days and I will be home tuesday night to get ready to go to work on Wednesday next week...but thank you for the tip..
and I am quite picky, so if I don't find anything to suit me I may just go down and drive back just means getting up about 3:00 am and getting ready to be down in Memphis for 7:30 am to begin orientation..

We travel often, probably stay in a hotel/motel/cruiseship every month. It is our protocol to keep the luggage outside while I go in and strip a corner of the bed, check under the seams, look at the outlets nearest the bed, and give the room a general once over. We are not staying at inexpensive places. While we get discounts, we are still paying for more than 3-star rooms. Generally, we prefer the suites where the bedroom is completely separate.

So far, we have been fortunate and have no encountered any problems. But I will check - always. And I advise you to do the same, regardless whether you are staying in a Motel6 or a Crowne Plaza. Bedbugs don't care how much the room costs and can travel from a RedRoof Inn to the Westin via luggage.

And bedbugs are not the only issue. A friend of mine bought a house in Florida and she and her husband drove down to do some remodelling. Along the way, they stopped at a mid-range motel. My friend has allergies and didn't think much about the red patches or itchiness the next day. She applied lotions yet it increased. Day 3 she went to a doctor who diagnosed LICE! I don't even know how to check bedding for that. I've never seen one, never seen anyone with them.
