Yet they can mean so much to someone who is hurting or troubled. It gives them hope and can heal. Kind words coming from family member, friend or loved one can mean so much even if you don't always agree.

I think many people are depressed or mentally stressed simply because they do not hear enough gracious, encouraging and kind words in their life. They are even more important in this day and age of hostility stress and anger that seems so prevalent. I think that kind words are one of the most important things a human needs. Many troubled people may have just been raised in an environment where kind words were few and far between. Saying the right things at the right times is important.

Any thoughts on this?

Well said....I always try to offer kind words to people that look tired, stressed or in need. Many people have given me kind words when I needed them and I realized how much it helped.

Know Nonsense, you are absolutely correct! I grew up in a home where kind words were few and far between. In fact, there was a lot of bullying and discouragement even within my family. I have made a great effort in life to be just the opposite of the way I was raised. A kind word can lift someone's spirits tremendously. I'll even sometimes say something kind to a stranger in a store, and it will put a big smile on their face and sometimes start up a pleasant conversation. Kindness never goes out of style.

I agree. and often times, you may not know how much it can mean to the person you are saying it to. I think the whole pay it forward thing is great and it seems to be popping up much more.
