I wouldn't quite say whites largely control Mexico - in fact - after the downfall of the PRI, it is hard to say exactly who does control Mexico (cartels? political technocrats? business owners?), but Mexican whites (including Jewish, Lebanese, Spaniard, and other European descended people) are almost automatically part of the upper class in Mexico.

Turn on any Spanish TV station and take a look.

Paraphrasing an article I once read, Mexico is a nation of Indians run by people who look to hail from Scandinavia.

Regarding media and new personalities:

Carmen Aristegui from CNN Espanol in Mexico is very European looking.

Joaquin Lopez Doriga from Televis was born in Spain but I am not convinced he is full European, he looks very Mexican. Plus the guy can't speak English unlike most of Mexico's elite. Source: google his interview with Anthony Hobkins.

Adela Micha is Mexican-Jewish, but she does not look white.

Jorge Ramos (in the US Hispanic Media but Mexican born) is on the lighter side but doesn't appear to be full European.

Javier Altatorre the anchorman from Hechos on Azteca TV is more on the mestizo side, the guy could probably pass for Middle Easterner as well.

None of these people resemble Benito Juarez but none of them look Scandinavian in my book.

White people control wealth, resources, power structures, and the media everywhere on the planet---Mexico is no exception. I live in the capital of Mexico City for half the year--one of the playgrounds and the business center for the uber rich and powerful in Mexico. Trust me, the mega-rich and powerful are preeeeeettttty white. Even Mexico's solidly middle classers are lighter in color than the indigenous majority. Maybe not Scandinavian white---but certainly not indigenous brown. Have you seen the President of Mexico? He's about as white as they come (dark hair/white skin) for Mexico. He's related to four of the past governors of his home state. Like most monied and powerful circles who don't want to share any of their goodies, nepotism and cronyism run rampant. Both are rampant in the U.S. too---but whites are still the majority here, so it's a little less noticeable.

Joaquin López Doriga does not look Mexican (typical one) at all.

They are usually the decendants of Spanish people who went to colonize the Americas, and were offered land and wealth in that new land by the spanish government.

When those territories were still Spanish territories at the time, usually their governments were the sons of Spanish settlers.

Even most of the people who led the different wars of independance against spain where part of this white minority, and when they got independance, then they retained power and have always been part of the political and economical elite in most countries in the Americas.

Chances are in a country like Mexico, that the whiter you look being a Mexican, the more chances you are of being rich, well educated and with a good social position.

Why don't the brown Mexicans want to rebel against the rich white Mexicans for hoarding the wealth & power to themselves in Mexico?

In South Africa, us blacks rebelled against the white minority rule during Apartheid which resulted in its abolition in 1994.

Mexican culture and history is diverse and complex. Comparing it to South Africa is way off.

Its too much to explain here because there are so many layers- grand Native American civilizations, the Spanish conquest, mestizaje(mixing) and the ideology of la raza cósmica, wars, battles, a revolution and so on.

It is best to study it a little if you are truly interested in learning more about it.

It might just be his high cheek bones and larger nose, but to me he does not look 100% Euro.

I admit that I know little about Mexico's history but I find it interesting that a minority white demographic in Mexico can be so much more powerful than the vast majority of the population.

I do not intend to be rude but do many/most of the brown Mexicans not care about the white Mexicans's monopoly on power, wealth, and media?
