hi there,we want to go skiing xmas/ New year time.. and want to drive there...we went to Gatlinburg in Tennessee last year.. and although the town and area was nice the skiing was not too good.

Can anyone else recommend a good place...I have heard sugar mountain in NC is good... does anyone have any suggestions.. (apart from getting on a plane and paying a bomb to Aspen!!!)...do not want to travel longer than 14 hrs... thanks!!

Snow in the Carolinas or at any of the ski resorts within a days drive are hit or miss each year. They never know if they'll have enough snow or if it will be cold enough to make snow. Beach Mountain and Sugar Mountain, while beautiful not a lot else around. If you want to ski, you'll need to fly.

I would look at flights now and keep my dates and locations flexible. You could check out Colorado, Utah, NY, Vermont, etc. Surely a price to one of those destinations would be reasonable.

Since you apparently reside in Miami, are against flying, and do not want to drive over 14 hours, maybe you should take up water skiing instead, which is a far less lame version of skiing.

hi there thanks for suggestions...not a question of not liking flying LIMEHOUSE) it just adds to all the cost....and the ski areas seem so expensive...for four people u r talking of 5500 plus compared to sugar at 2500 plus...even with cheap flights we would then have to hire a car....any more suggestions?

The closest place we went to was Snowshoe in W. VA. Combined it with a trip to D.C. We didn't ski though. We only snowshoed and went tubing so I don't know how that area is for skiing.

I'll second Snowshoe. NC and VA and even W. VA can be hit or miss like others have said. Snowhoe will be your best bet, but probably over your 14 hour drive limit.
