First off I post where I want. You don't like it. You can go do you know what. Not surprising you mistake hate for truth. I'm informing people how is to live. Many people get enamoured in what they see in tv. I'm actually helping. You really don't know how many people thanked me for telling them to go more up north than Miami.

I have to say that much of what JFC says about Miami is often repeated by many other people. As a journalist I've learned that when there is consistency in information that is often repeated there is usually a measure of truth to it. Now, I must admit, I am under the sway of Miami's bright lights, glitter and glitz right now, but I'm also a realist. Miami is nice, but if you don't make a good income it can be a tough place to live, economically speaking. My wife, on the other hand, was not impressed with Miami and preferred Ft. Lauderdale. Coral Gables is a pretty area. Looking at the homes we saw I know it is also a pricy area. I think the OP can find something in the area, but as others have said, they will have to make some financial and other adjustments.

If you are honest, you probably can't count on one hand how many people you know from these areas and actually lived in Miami for years.
You think anyone who is Southern is unworldly and stupid apparently; having no capacity to adapt and accept other kinds of people. People tend to like what they are familiar with, pretty universal. Like someone from Miami moving to Melbourne, FL and finding it not the same "Florida" they are used to. It really depends on the the individuals

The OP does not seem to expect Miami to the the same South that she is used to. She and her family may find they *love* Miami or at the very least enjoy make the best of their time living there.

And yes Atlanta is very different from small town rural GA; just like Minneapolis is different from Walnut Grove, MN. Any large city will be different from small towns in the same state/country.

Default Miami from a mother of two

This person could not be more accurate. We moved here several years ago, to a beautiful neighborhood in Coral Gables, close to Miracle Mile. We bought a very nice house, made lots of friends, did everything we could to make it work but we are finally moving and couldn't be happier. People (everywhere) are generally rude, especially if you do not speak spanish (in every part of Miami). People are terrible drivers which makes traffic worse. Customer service and general standards (being on time, polite, even showing up to appointments) generally does not exist. There is absolutely nothing to do other than go to the beach or shop with kids - no free activities whatsoever. And please please research crime in Coral Gables, its extremely high, there is no section of Miami you can live in without a burglar alarm. Especially Coral Gables which sadly is a target. Out of all the neighborhoods in Miami, I agree Coral Gables is in fact the most beautiful, most civilized neighborhood by far. But it's still Miami. I couldn't be happier to soon be leaving.

That's sad, but where are you moving to?

You are making the right decision by leaving Miami, but you learned the hard way.

Miami is a lovely place, but I will never understand (maybe I haven't been here for too long) how the country allows that. Want to live here? Speak English, pass the test. As in immigrant myself I would be happy to take it. I realize a lot of Cuban Americans and other immigrants from some countries were fleeing for their lives, but I feel that 1) they are minority as most are economic immigrants 2) you should still adopt American ways of lives.
I could not agree more, so please vote wisely in November.
