Both Cooper City and Davie are in Broward County, and with the way traffic is in Dade will violate your "no more than 40 minutes of driving" criterion. Other than that, Cooper City's pretty nice. Also look into Southwest Ranches.

Have you thought about Key Biscayne, Coconut Grove, The City of South Miami, Pinecrest, Coral Gables, East Kendall or Palmetto Bay?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd appreciate any more information about these areas that you could give (schools, people, general feel of the area, etc).

Cooper City has lots of retirees, quiet, slightly larger than average lots. Southwest Ranches is "horse property," parcels tend to be 1 - 5 acres. SWR is farther west, closer to the Turnpike (which unfortunately doesn't help if your wife is working at Jackson). Can't tell you anything about the schools though, sorry.

If I had to live in a Miami suburb I'd definitely choose Kendall, its nice and in good distance to all the nice places of Miami. I wouldn't want to live all the way in Broward

miami suburbs arent like the ones up north, then tend to have smaller yards. and most houses are around 1500sqft to 2500, horse country and far out in kendal, IE: anything past 137th ave is where the big houses are.

You could probably pull a good home in Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay, east Kendall, or South Miami. Good schools in those suburbs (Pinecrest/Palmetto Bay are probably the best in the county for middle and high school...east Kendall and South Miami are still good though as well). Also convenient to the Metrorail which your wife could use to commute to the UM medical campus.

Now is the time to buy. I would reccomend Pinecrest, also if you can find it Miami Shores is one of Miami's best suburbs close to the city, nice area. Older homes. But for that size house it might be out of the price rang.

Miami Lakes is another nice area, but a bit far from UM. The drive in Rush hour would probably be just about 40mins.
