Having just moved less then two months ago....... the neighbor across the street introduced themselves as we were unloading the truck. The neighbors kitty corner across the street came over about the 5 day mark. The next door neighbors on one side waited about 2 weeks and then brought us over a bag of rare apples. A couple of days after that the neighbor kitty corner on the other side came over and brought us a bunch of produce from her garden. My remaining neighbor (next door on the other side) has never introduced herself but has waved several times and called "Hello" across the way.
On our walks we've met a few more neighbors further down the road.

I guess we lucked out onto a friendly neighborhood! It's not the first time for us tho.

Back to the original question: I personally found it annoying to have to stop and chat while I'm trying to unload/unpack/organize. I'm hot, dirty, sweaty, probably stink, and I am just not in the mood to chitchat at that time. I much prefer the visits that waited at least a couple of days.

People shouldn't introduce themselves on move in day, that is a busy day and most people are not at their best and don't really want to meet someone new, a wave, or a quick Hi is enough, real introductions should wait a couple days. IMHO.

Been here 1 year and only 1 neighbor stopped by when they saw me out front doing landscaping. The rest are snobs.......I tried to meet my next door neighbor but they made it pretty clear they weren't interested.

I came from previous neighborhoods where we everyone was friendly, got together once in a while for a beer and looked out for each other. When someone moved in, I waited about a week and brought over a baked good just to introduce myself.

This sub......guy across the street in clearly out of town as he is meticulous and his garbage cans have been sitting out since Thursday. I want to go drag them up to his garage but he snubs me and looks the other way each time I'm outside or drive by, and this is on a dead end cul-de-sac street. He's probably get pissed that I touched his stuff or went on his property. Sad.

Wait a week or so, if you see them outside walk over. If they have kids, bring em some cupcakes. Neighbors can be great or neighbors can suck....work on being a great neighbor because I can tell you having sucky neighbors really does suck.

I think it is nice if you introduce yourselves the next day after they have unpacked a few things and had a rest. Personally i wouldn't go overboard and offer them dinner, just a coffee and cake.

I usually bake some cookies or brownies (nut free, just in case, and wrapped in foil, in case they have little kids they would rather not know what is in the package) and print up a card indicating who we are and where we live, and our home number, and go drop them off the first couple of days. Gives me a chance to welcome them to the neighborhood, find out do they have kids that might like a little help making friends in the neighborhood and let them know they have a friendly neighbor should they need something.

We've moved a lot, and knowing a neighbor or two early on makes the transition easier.

Just an update: we've met them several times now, once was at the bus stop and the other was when I was working out in the yard and they were doing their phase II of moving in. Nice people. It was funny to discuss where our property line/lawn mowing etiquette fell.

Haven't baked them anything yet..

LOL, I'm not sure everyone is as much of a nerd as me. I had a hard childhood. I think there is nothing that can't be solved by a cookie, a hug, a nap or a nice chat.

Give them 2 or 3 days to get settled and do some unpacking. They might appreciate somthing to eat so delivey a casserole or an invite to yours for dinner/BBQ.

I might say hello if they're outside when I'm moving the trash. I know the name of one neighbor because his name is on his work truck.
