Can you enlighten us on why real estate fell into disfavor on Sugar Island ? Maybe the whole area around the Soo ? I have heard several people talk about Sault Ste Marie , of late , that they don't like it anymore.......compared to other parts of the UP.

Terry, if Drummond Island is what you are looking for , then Drummond Island it should be! A beautiful place. I have been there several times myself. What you need to find is a home inspector. Those who look into the overall condition of a home. Find a certified home inspector or a builder who advertises such services. Get references. I'm pretty sure you have propane on the island as the main heating fuel or wood fired. Either way, you would want to put the emphasis on winterabilty. Solid construction, good insulation and at least two heat sources. Check in the phone book. You should be able to find someone. Good luck..............

My husband and I have been thinking about moving to Drummond Island too. We are retired and living in Juneau, Alaska. We both grew up in Michigan and had fond memories of visiting Drummond for vacations. Two years ago we rented a house there for a week and had a family reunion. It was great! We loved the Island and have been thinking about it ever since. I can't answer your questions as I have some of the same ones myself. Plus, I don't know how smart it would be to buy in Michigan right now. Their housing market has really taken a dive and I don't know if property values are going to continue to go down. Anyway, I just wanted you to know that not everyone thinks you're crazy for wanting to live on an isolated island.

Interesting thread...as I was reading it I also thought maybe someone would be interested in Harsens Island. Also somewhat secluded, much smaller, but closer to mainland (Algonac) via carferry and necessities when needed (hospitals, doctors, etc).
