And there is more snow. And tons and tons of grey days, short days. Of
course summers are wonderful.
Don't forget that those summer days can have daylight until 10 pm. One of my favorite things about a Michigan summer.

My fiancé also assures me that you guys have way different winter clothes available than we do--that I won't have to suffer!! Lol

It looks absolutely beautiful there in pictures. I can't wait to see it. This will be my first time up in the northern states so also looking forward to getting to see the northern lights for the first time!!

I can't thank you all enough for being so kind. I love wooded areas, love to hunt and fish as well so I suppose I will be ok if I make it through the colder days haha

Thank you all again for the information. Would you suggest we find housing in Oscada itself, Au Sable, or another town?? We are hoping to rent a cabin off the lake for a while at least... If any are available. Lol I've looked on Craigslist in Oscada itself, there isn't a lot of housing available there. Will keep an eye out though. Not long to go.. Fiancé starts his job up there February 12th so we will be coming a few days beforehand.
Not sure if you're still checking this thread, but I hope so because I just saw it! My husband is from Oscoda and I'm from the neighboring town of Tawas.

School-wise: I attended Junior High and High School in Tawas, and my husband went through all of the Oscoda school systems (Elementary through High School). I am personally glad that I went to Tawas schools. I had a good experience! I had many friends that went to Oscoda schools and they're not bad-- just not as clean of an environment. Fights, drugs, etc. are a little more prevalent in Oscoda. On another note Oscoda's High School has an indoor swimming pool so they're able to offer swimming, etc. They also offer building trades classes where the students actually build a house over the course of the year.

Location-wise: Both Tawas and Oscoda are a stones-throw away from eachother. Tawas is going to have the better shopping by far, whereas Oscoda has the AuSauble River which is a BLAST in the Summer. Both locations are also close in proximity to the lake. Tawas is growing more quickly than Oscoda is, though it used to be the other way around. Ever since they closed the Air Force Base in Oscoda their economy has just not been doing as well, while Tawas has grown extensively. Tawas has an active Chamber of Commerce and an annual festival at the beginning of February called Perchville (lots of fun)! Too bad you'll miss it this year!

Let me know if you have any questions. I'd be glad to help!!

Well... you managed to pick one of the coldest times of year to move here, and we happen to be in a REALLY cold stretch of weather right now, even for February! Hang in there, it will get better!

Because it can't get much worse!

I was up at a friend's cabin the other day on Lake Huron. Fifteen degrees below zero with strong winds, gusting up to 40 mph, coming off of the lake. BRRRRR. They even canceled the scheduled polar bear dip. No jumping into the icy waters that day!

It's absolutely beautiful up here. We don't get but maybe a light dusting of snow in Oklahoma, so this is snow like I've never seen before! 😊

Around when do the temps start hitting 50s-60s? Usually by March its there in Oklahoma. I expect it to take a little longer here.

Two things that are different here so far:

1.) no tax on food items here!!!! That was a nice surprise!!!
2.) liquor in grocery stores etc. Not used to that! Lol we had to go to a liquor store to get anything other than beer.

50-60's? Could be early March to early to mid April. This year, I would expect it to be later.

According to this East Tawas, Michigan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, it would be about late April that the temps get into the 50-60 range

I have family on Van Etton Lake in Oscoda. Many people have Pontoon boats for evening rides around the lake or for fishing. It's also a good lake for water skiing or jet skis. If you don't live on thelake there is a boat launch near the Air Force base visitors can use. While the base closed a few years back, it is still used for private businesses. I'd guess that's where you husbands job is located.

The lake is also great for ice fishing. The AuSable River feeds the lake and then empties at Foote Dam before reaching Lake Huron. If you are still looking there is also Ceder Lake in Oscoda, Greenbush, or Harrisville. There is a couple good golf courses. Also a few good restaurants if you learn where to go. Not as much snow on the E side of the state vs. W. I spent many Christmas seasons there with my parents, and had no problem driving anywhere.

It is beautiful area. Best wishes!
