I've been to Mackinac Island and it is truly wonderful.

I don't think he should have came if he had to use cars. In his defense, it looks like the cars were only used in the undeveloped backroads between the airport and the Grand Hotel and not downtown or around the perimeter of the island.

If you had a medical emergency on the island, I bet you would have no issue with ambulances rushing you to the hospital.

Did Pence have a medical emergency on the island?

Do they have a hospital?

Not exactly. There is Mackinac Island Medical Center. It's got an emergency room, but it's mostly a clinic. And only open 9am-4pm.

If you have a major emergency, you're getting a helicopter to St Ignace

Helicopter? How dare that mechanical contraption land on Mackinac Island and scare the horses!

Ahh so you have never been there. That is why you cannot understand the issue.

Pence encountered the same problem, however as a public figure he really should have bothered to look into it. It is pretty callous to simply show up without learning anything about the place you are going. It says that you do not really care about the place, it is unimportant in your eyes. And that is exactly the problem.

I don't think many believe the VP makes his own travel arrangements. However, the VP is responsible for the way things appear, and he is going to bear the brunt of the criticism because he is ultimately responsible for what happens on his travels. He can blame whomever he wants. We blame him because he is the face of the issue. The buck stops there.

No. I think a competent politician looks into places he is visiting and learns as much as practical about the place so he can avoid offensive gaffes that will be used against him in later political contests. It takes only a few minutes to do so. The failure to do so, or at least have staff do so, is a slap in the face to the people or place he is visiting. "You are not worth the bother of learning your customs or traditions." It is like visiting a Japanese household and not knowing you are supposed to remove your shoes.

Is it a disaster to do so? no. Is it a slap in the face to your hosts? Yup. Will it hurt him politically? Yes some. Maybe not enough to matter. Although as close as Michigan was in 2016, it could actually be outcome determination in an election. It was a foolish oversight.

A politician who just shows up without learning about the people or places he is visiting is not very astute.

Obama never gave a second thought to all the traffic disruption he caused during his many boondoggles to Detroit.
