Living In The UP
Hey everyone, my girlfriend and I currently live in Minnesota and are really interested in moving to the UP. We both enjoy the outdoors a ton (Ex. Boating, Fishing, Hiking & Camping,) and have decided we would like to move to the UP. I work for an airline so I need to live within an hours drive of these cities. Houghton/Hancock, Marquette, Iron Mountain, Escanaba, Sault. Looking for some info on which of these areas we might like the best. We prefer to have land 5+ acres and dont mind being away from a large city. Thanks everyone!

I just read a post that you stated "true Minnesotans stay in Minnesota". I find that odd.....

Well I mean people from Minnesota dont move to southern states which everyones post's were about. I consider MN, WI and MI all okay in my eyes but I see your thought!

I may be biased here, but IMHO, Marquette is the ticket. It is the largest "city" in the U.P. You can buy a house 20 miles outside of Marquette and get more for your money, yet are a hop, skip and a jump to Marquette. The airport is about 20ish miles away, and you have all the things you need/want to have close by. Houghton/Hancock, while beautiful, is too far removed from things. I love the U.P., but would never live any distance away from Marquette.

I like Marquette too, but I'm partial to Escanaba.
I've just had better luck fishing there....
I was born in the Soo, and there are lots of little towns close by that are nice.
Brimley and Rudyard come to mind.....
I've never been to Houghton but I hear it's quite a hoot.

Take a look at Ontonagon county. Lots of low property taxes, land not to expensive but it is a long drive to Marquette or Houghton if you need anything beyond the basics. Although they have a nice little hospital and a couple of grocery stores, restaurants, bars etc.

There has been some upward pressure on the cost of housing, because so many people from the Lower are buying property in the UP for either vacations or retirement. With the economy the way it is, that might be relieved somewhat.
A lot of people in Traverse City have bought places up there, and make the round trip drive on summer weekends, which seems crazy to me (4 hours each way), but they're doing it.
