Not having spent much time in Michigan, I'm looking for a nice weekend getaway location to a town on Lake Michigan. I prefer a more resort-type accomodation than the small country-type inn. The "teddy bear" room or the "blue quilt" room thing is just not for us. Relaxing is fine, but if there is something with a decent downtown or walkable shopping area with laid-back restaurants/bars, that would be great. Any ideas Michigan experts? Thanks.

Grand Haven is definitely worth investigating.

Grand Haven, definitely. Here's one idea: Welcome to Khardomah Lodge - Welcoming Vistors to Grand Haven Since 1919!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. It definitely seems like South Haven or Grand Haven are the top recommendations for towns not too far north. Are there any specific places to stay that anyone has really enjoyed? I will definitely check out the Khardomah Lodge. Anything else?

Thanks.

Sorry, South Haven has the best beach on Lake Michigan by far.
