I know this sounds weird to the outsiders, but I will still contend that Walker's Point/5th Ward is safe. Despite the vic milford killing last year and now this. Shootings normally occur just west of 94/43 about a mile west of Walker's Point. I have lived here for 3 years and I still feel pefectly safe. Now if stolen cars and shootings and robberies happened every day here then it would be a different story. But this is an up and coming area. I pray for the officers families and relatives.

I agree with Milwaukee City that the area is relatively safe.

We just don't have petty crimes every day here, if anything its bar fights. When you live in a metro area you have to be at least cautious b/c criminals do have cars or in this case bikes as well. I listen to my police scanner every night and you rarely hear calls for police in Walker's Point however you go 10 blocks west of the freeway and that where the crime is. The freeway acts as a barrier in a sense.

The shooting on 2nd and National shows that tragic, insane events like this can happen just about anywhere, anytime. I pass through that intersection quite frequently and there's always a lot of foot, auto and bike traffic. It's a busy area full of bars, restaurants and a major high school. I literally have never once felt unsafe on 2nd and National, because when I'm there it's usually pretty lively with regular people going about their business.

The conduct of passerby should shed a very positive light on the neighborhood. A UPS guy followed the suspect so he could tell police where he was hiding. A taxi cab driver and other neighbors rendered aid to the officers. Neighbors and business owners nearby helped the responders find the suspect.

Thankfully it looks like both officers will survive, and the perp will be brought to justice. This is a reminder of the great physical risk our officers take on every single day to keep the rest of us safe.
