Yeah, I heard about that. The guy didn't even know it was the mayor, not that it makes it any worse, but still.

Whether you like or dislike him as a mayor, you have to give Barrett credit for stepping up in the situation. Sadly, think of how many people these days would just mind their own business and keep walking.

I don't think it is surreal story. To believe that a 20yr old doesn't know who a famous politician is not unbelievable. 99 out of 100 times if you intervene in a domestic dispute you will be attacked, their is something about domestic disputes that pushes people way beyond normal thinking. Nonetheless I pray for Tom Barrett and his family, I don't agree with 90% of his politics but he is a great guy and one of the nicest politicians a person can meet. Tom is truly a great guy I give him a medal for doing what hopefully any of us who do. Crime just doesn't happen in the inner city but it happens in Kenosha, Menomonie and West Allis. Here is yet another reason why we can't let nonviolent criminals out. I'm just not shocked any more when I hear bizarre crime stories, sad to say I don't know what would shock me nowadays.
Get Well Soon Tom!!!

What makes it a surreal story is a mayor of a large US city getting accosted and brutally beaten up. Doesn't happen too often.
Mayor Barrett's politics are not my own, however, he tends to be a man of upstanding integrity and I respect him. He took an extremely noble act, and certainly I am thankful it appears he'll be okay without much long-term damage. I am also thankful his daughters were okay, along with the one-year old he was working to help protect.
I hope he recovers very soon fully.

I know what you're saying but this day in age anything can happen to anyone.

Is it really too much to simply support the mayor in this incident without the need to mention one's own politics in this thread as well?

I hear Barrett may run for governor, I know he'll get my vote if he does. Wouldn't it be great to actually have a politician in Madison that gives a crap about Milwaukee?

Actually, no one is mentioning politics at all. Because it has nothing to do w/what happened to him. He is a well-liked mayor, REGARDLESS of his politics.
