Hey Everyone,

My husband is military currently and getting out by end of 2013. We are moving to Mnpls for a job. I've been up there a few times and it's such a large city.

Where would a family move to that wants
-to live not too far from the city or from a park-n-ride
-still far enough out in the "country", so we could have chickens and a rooster, a garden, lots of room to run around and play for the boys.

Any suggestions?

Thank you!

~~Elisa in NE currently just for a while.

We are not sure the exact location yet. It could be downtown Mnpls, or one of the suburbs

Well, it's hard to give specific advice not knowing where you will be but anywhere you go around the metro that is about 20-30 miles or more away from the core will offer you farmland, open spaces, etc. for what you want. Once you find out where the job is specifically, we can help pin point places to consider but just know you will have several places to look into when you do get here.

Look North along the 35W corridor anywhere beyond Forest Lake for the easiest commute and best value.

Unless they get a job in say, Lakeville and now have a hour plus commute each way

Afton - Lake Elmo area

Afton would be the best, very small town in the St Croix river valley, its a really quiet town though but it has some really cute shops. Very hilly and close to downtown Stillwater and downtown Saint Paul.

Generally speaking, I would have to say Golfgal has a point. There are a number of locations that would work for the OP's purposes, but it would make more sense to find the job location and then start looking for specific spots. Forest Lake or Ham Lake could be great locations to consider if the job ends up in downtown (either), but if you have to go through downtown to get to a job twice (on the round trip), you could end up spending so much time in commute you won't be able to enjoy your country home and open spaces.

Like a couple people already said.... it would definitely be helpful to know where you will be working. What you described can really be found on any side of the metro area, but random suggestions might have you commuting all the way across the metro area in rush hour traffic.

I like some of the far west areas, but I wouldn't suggest it if you will be commuting anywhere east of downtown Minneapolis. It would be a good option for a downtown Minneapolis job or General Mills, Target Financial, Carlson, Cargill, Allianz, Siemens, and a few others places which are west of downtown Minneapolis.
