I wouldn't specifically call Uptown a family place. So many apartment buildings. Go south or north from Calhoun, and you are talking more family residential. Not to say some families don't live close to Lake-Hennepin, but its never been the vibe for me. My brother and I shared an apartment in our 20's.

It's OK family-wise. There are a lot of nice parks, playgrounds and beaches. We have an 8-year old and spend a lot of time at Lakes Calhoun and Harriet. There are kids, but not like in the 'burbs. Since kids really aren't allow to "roam" anymore it's hard for them to find each other. He met a lot of kids once he started school.

I can give you my personal experience: moved to Uptown in 2001. Since then, we've had a car stolen, been broken into, have had things taken from our porch and backyard, graffiti...

I think most of these are crimes of opportunity. There is a lot of foot-traffic in the area, and if something's sitting there, a small percentage of the population will try to steal it.

Here's the deal people. If you have a lot of money.....you'll live in a single family home by lake Calhoun or isles.......if you don't, you will live in a rental.

should've finished my thought........and it is this mix of people (renters and home owners) and things (lakes and commerce, for example) that make this a great neighborhood.

I spent a lot of time in that area when I lived in Minneapolis. I never had a problem with my safety, and I never observed any crime. There is a lot of nightlife, but the vast majority of it is very close to the Hennepin/Lake intersection.

For a family, I would consider East Calhoun fine. Lots of parks and outdoor recreation. The only thing that I can't speak to is education, I have no idea what the schools are like.

You really don't have anything to worry about in East Calhoun. It's a very nice neighborhood and every time I've walked through it, I've spent most of my time admiring the beautiful homes and apartments. It's south of the Uptown core, which really makes it a lot quieter.

I don't really know how the neighborhood fares for children, but you have the beautiful lake right there and I've seen children out a few times in the area. I'm guessing it really depends on your taste.

If it were I, I'd choose to live west of Hennepin. East seems more suited to singles.

ECCO is west of Hennepin. East of Hennepin (and south of Lake) is CARAG. Both are going to be pretty chill places and I just never really get much of an Uptown vibe from them (except for the very northern parts). The real divide is more north of Lake. I'd say there's a definite difference in neighborhoods between the west side of Hennepin (East Isles) and the east side (Lowry Hill East/Wedge).
