Hi friends,

Do any of you own cabins or frequent them often in the summer? If so, do you have a favorite area or lake that you can recommend.

Also, I'm glad that you call them cabins. People in Wisconsin usually call them cottages and folks in Michigan say camps. Good on you, MN.

I'm from Western Wisconsin and they're mostly called cabins there. We shared a cabin with my cousins in Chetek.

I think the word "cottage" is used by older people to describe more humble accommodations. Which is hilarious, because "cabins" these days really aren't. They're now palatial lake homes.

Yeah, I think cottage is more of an Eastern Wisconsin thing. I've heard that around Green Bay and close to the U.P.

I'm from Michigan and we called them cottages. Camps is an eastern term that I heard being used in Maine.

Our friends in Vermont say "camp" too...I thought they had bought a campground when they first got their cabin

As for good places-depends on budget---Alexandria is nice because it's a "quick" drive and there are a lot of
things to do close by, same with the Brainerd Lakes area. If your budget isn't as high, places like Fergus Falls are not as "resorty" and prices are better.

In Louisiana, esp. in bayou territory, they also call them 'camps'.

If you look at the realty websites these days, most of the homes called "cabins" in Minnesota are actually mobile or manufactured homes. The idealized pre WWII Minnesota log or wood shingled cabin is more expensive and rare than a bog lemming.

You obviously have never been to the Alexandria, Willmar or Brainerd lakes area. Most "cabins" are nicer than most homes...

You're right. I should have added (and meant to) . . . more rare than bog lemmings OR are priced far out of the reach of most people OR are newly built and overpriced McMansions that just happen to be partially made of logs.

Just spend some time on realtor.com, trulia.com, homes.com, Zillow.com, etc. etc. etc. to see what I mean. If you search for "cabin" in MN you'll come up with apx. 85% mobile or manufactured homes, maybe 12% newly, poorly built, and overpriced log homes on chopped up property, and about 3% nice historic cabins which either are selling for a boatload of money or are in terrible condition and on just a shred of the their original land. Sad but true!
