I've lived in several states. Minnesota is "home" (by birth). Housing in Minnesota, particularly in the Twin Cities, is expensive and awful. Many bedrooms are 9 by "something". That's not a bedroom, that's a closet with a window.

The price per square foot in MN is about 35% more than many places in this country. The construction is poorly done, materials are cheap, and the quality just isn't there.

I'm moving outta here, once I retire.

Ha -- funny, because when we moved back here our reaction was "wow, look at what we get for our money in Minnesota! It's so affordable!" But it all depends on perspective... we were coming from living in expensive cities where you pay a whole lot more for a whole lot less. And we've always lived in older homes with quality materials and good construction. Our house dates to 1901 and is in great shape (knock on wood!). We paid $230 per square foot for our place.

That said, there definitely are cheaper places in the country. But if makes you feel any better, you can couch surf Craigslist ads and home listings in more expensive places. It could be much worse!

My son's bedrooms are 12 x 12. My bedroom is something like 15 x 22. Maybe a little bigger.

Compared to where is the question?

I actually agree somewhat. A lot of the houses in Minneapolis are 60-100 years old and have small rooms. Plus there are also a lot of ancient 1920s 4 or 6 plex condo buildings, as well as a lot of awful 1970s era low rise buildings.

It is worse once you are out of the cities, though. Most homes up north are very cheaply constructed.

Did you come from the south?

I do wish there were more newer houses but I think the quality is pretty great. I can't believe how insulated our place is (built in 2011 so not old building ways).

Seems like an odd set of opinions to hold, but that's your prerogative. If you like big bedrooms you are free to buy or build a house that caters to that desire.

And we are are in the top 5 metro areas (1 million plus) for percentage of home ownership, so apparently most residents don't find housing prohibitively expensive to own.

When I read the OP's complaint I thought I had accidentally entered the San Francisco or New York forum.

Hey Mary Richard's apartment had a lot of charm.

Compared to both coasts, Minnesota is dirt cheap.
