A place to wax nostalgic about Twin Cities icons (or forgotten features) of yesterday. Entertainment venues, old photos, news stories, celebrities or whatever-happened-to? musings. Dig thru your folks old photos and post them here. Would love to see some shots of the old street-cars, busses or downtown scenes.

I grew up in Bloomington and Walsh's Grocery Store was on about 99th & Lyndale and it was the first place I drove to on my own. This is a 1960's era newspaper flyer from that store...

1960's Met Stadium concession prices...

Mall of America (looking East)...

^This was 1955 and the year before Metropolitan Stadium was built at the center of this photo. Cedar Avenue (believe it was called Hwy37) runs left-to-right (in the center) between the two ponds on the right hand side of the photo. 78th Street runs top to bottom torwards the right hand side and this was before 494 was constructed. I believe Bloomington Drive-in Theatre is the open light-colored area at the top-center. The new suburbs of Richfield and Bloomington are creeping in across the top. Wold Chamberlain Field (MSP) is out of view and off to the right of this photo.

Very cool! Love the images!

In 1998 I bought a house in Northfield, and in an odd nook above the kitchen ceiling, accessible from an attached storage area, I found all sorts of newspapers from the 1950s, mostly published in a city in Iowa (I forget which one)... in the German language. There were also a few Minneapolis Star newspapers. The newspapers mostly fell apart when handled.

Also, I found several small posters from the old local Grand Theater, advertising initial-release movies playing at the time (again, the 1950s). One of them was From Here To Eternity.

The entire hoard was fascinating to sift through.

I LOVE this kind of stuff--especially the old grocery store ads!!

I think that blue Dodge Dart in that last photo was my first car, many years after this photo .

Wow look at those concession prices! unbelievable. Imagine what today would be like if beer cost 60 cents at Target Field lol. Also what is a "Rich-Kid"?? hahaha

I always loved looking up information about the old Streetcar system we used to have.

Wow nice picture ^

Isn't the Minneapolis Street grid interesting? It started out downtown aligned with the Mississippi than they North-South when you get farther out of town. Gives us a really unique view of our skyline when were on the road especially on 35w

I'm guessing the Rich-Kid is a clever Minnesota take on a New Orleans Po-Boy sandwich.

Storkers Drive-in - Bloomington, 78th & Cedar 1951 - Looking NE from what today would be in the center of the SW clover-leaf at Hwy 77 & 494 with the Water Park of America behind you and looking towards the airport.

Google Maps

78th & 34th Ave looking SW from what would now be the Embassy Suites Parking lot towards the Health Partners (Control Data) Campus to the SW.

One thing to note, lack of trees--lots of people assuming that all of the trees in the suburbs were knocked over to build houses, not true

I'm showing my generational bias here, but that WDGY top hits list is incredible! Beatles, Kinks, Beach Boys, Supremes, Donovan, Jimmy Ruffin (one of my favorite songs!)
