Does anyone have any insight- good or bad- into St. Odilia School in Shoreview? Debating between there and the public school system (Turtle Lake Elem in Shoreview). My husband was raised in Catholic schools so he is pushing for it but I am on the fence. Any insight would be appreciated.

I grew up in Shoreview and had quite a few friends at St. Odilia, though I went to Snail Lake (which has now been rolled into Turtle Lake). If your husband is pushing for it because of religious reasons, then that's one thing, but academically Turtle Lake is one of the best elementary schools in the Twin Cities, and the Mounds View School District is one of the best in the state.

I raised my kids in Shoreview and put them in private school, though not St. Odilia. At the time the neighbor kids going to Turtle Lake elementary were not being taught the math tables and were using "sight" reading which I did not agree with at all. I would often go to the open houses and other doings at Turtle Lake elementary to keep an eye on things and the homework with "stars" on it were appalling. Misspelled words galore with "good job Johnny!" and a star on it, hanging up proudly for all to see, on 6th grade work. Many other examples I could go on and on. Personally I think your kids would get a much better education at St. Odilia or any other private school.
